Sailboat – Reconfiguration
I am making a sailboat from plywood. The planks are carved with images of things the I see in the water around New York. I made a series of rubbings, prints, and drawings using the relief carvings on the side of the boat. Throughout the process I continually reconfigured the form of the boat and the and two dimensional compositions. A decision made in the drawing effected the shape of the boat. The shape of the boat effected the composition of the drawing. The subject matter of the drawings – things I see in the rivers around New York (buildings, birds, etc) are predictions of what I will encounter. Because I am planning on using the boat in the New York Harbor, I think of the project as a compositional example of the ‘Thomas Theorem’ – or a self fulfilling prophecy.
